Could be way off but found places kinda similar to this and 147 around Myrtle Beach where I think the Ripleys Aquarium is. Im also wondering if the aquarium has something to do with the rusty fish clue.

"One plus one equals three... for large values of one!"

Nope, not a typo, but something puzzling that fits in with the underlying theme.

The numbering sequence (one through ten) is significant.

Alan:
“Is the numbering a clue?” -> No, but it is significant.

So '10 out of 9' isn't a typo?

It's good to know that my puzzles haven't killed off all interest.

"My guess (and I’d love confirmation)" -> I will take this opportunity to do an 'Adriaan' and say...
...that's all I have to say on this matter!

"some pretty fascinating, and sometimes implausible, stuff to read…" -> ah, grasshopper, you are indeed on the road to enlightenment!

"Is the numbering a clue?" -> No, but it is significant.

"What has a rusty fish got to do with all this?" -> that is it's own little riddle to solve. ;)

I pretty much came to the same conclusions. Not much to go on clue-wise. So it's down to oldfashioned searching on the basis of colours, shadows and terrain.

Adriaan

P.S. What has a rusty fish got to do with all this?
